Bonding an introduction.

When 2 or more atoms combine together chemically, a compound is formed.

  • This compound cannot be separated by physical (eg filtration/freezing). It takes another chemical reaction to do this. Bonds need to be broken.
  • The ration of elements in a compound is fixed.
  • Elements can also combine together to form compounds e.g. Cl2, N2, P4, S8 etc.

Definition: A compound consists of 2 or more elements chemically combined together in fixed proportions by mass.

 3 main types of bonding.

1.                  Ionic

2.                  Covalent

3.                  Metallic

Each type of bonding gives rise to a series of physical and chemical properties by which we can classify compounds
